When I was 8 years old my teacher told my mother to tell me that I'd said something that hurt another student. I'm sure my mother told me to take care with my words. But what I heard was, "My words hurt. So it's better if I don't talk."
I didn't become an instant mute, but my already shy nature became more withdrawn. I spoke when spoken to, but I didn't offer opinions. And if I was forced to give an opinion, I made sure I said something nice.
Change can be difficult, but it's necessary. It took me over 50 years to begin expressing myself. To offer an opinion. I still struggle with not wanting to hurt people, and my clients want honest feedback from an editor. If I only say nice things, I'm not helping them to improve. So I have to find ways to be honest and supportive.
