With a local printer, you send in your files and they send you a proof, you make sure the proof is okay, the books are printed, and you’re done.
With IngramSpark, things are a little different because they’re also distributors. When you add a new title to your dashboard (where your books are listed), you supply the following: title, language, short description, keywords, full description, and name of author.
Next, you categorize your book with BISAC codes—major categories which best describe the content of your book. Some examples are: Fiction/Romance/General; Body, Mind & Spirit/Astrology/Horoscopes; History/Ancient/Rome. You only have to pick one category, but you can choose up to three. These categories help booksellers and distributors determine what kind of book you have. In addition, you can choose a regional subject (geographical location, if applicable) and a Thema (like fiction or history).
Since Bella Toscana is a romantic drama with a lot of it taking place in Italy, I chose the BISAC category of Fiction/Romance/General with a Regional Subject of Italy and a Thema of Fiction & Related Items.
After all those choices, you determine your pricing and countries of distribution then you upload the files and wait for your electronic proof copy. When that's ready, you place your printing order. And you’re done!
